 Track Bike Maintenance

By Colby Pearce

Each spring it is ideal to run through your bike and make sure all is working well. It is easy to forget to look after your fixed gear track machine, because it is never ridden in the rain or snow. But track bikes need work too.

When things go wrong with equipment on the track, it can be disastrous. Look after everyone’s safety, including your own, by keeping your equipment in top shape.

Some things to keep in mind:

          • Bolts come loose. Run through your bike in the spring and tighten bolts to spec. I had a torque wrench surgically installed in my forearm, so I always know how much to tighten any given bolt perfectly. Good ones to check are seatpost, saddle clamp, stem faceplate, stem steerer clamp bolts, pedal threads, crank arms, chainring bolts, and of course axle nuts.
          • Chains need lube. It surprises me how frequently I hear track bikes on the boards with dry chains. Rain is not the only thing to take lube off a chain. A little goes a long way, but a little is definitely necessary every so often.
          • Bearings get worn. All those left turns on the banking tend to destroy bearings. This may be counterintuitive but there are a lot of lateral forces during high speed track riding, which can take a toll on bearings quicker that you may expect. Check hubs, head set and bottom bracket bearings to make sure they are adjusted and in good condition.
          • Tires wear out. When you can see tiny hairline cracks in the tire tread, it is time for a new tire. This may happen before the tread has been worn down from kilometers of riding. It may be tempting to keep using the tire, but when the rubber is compromised, it reduces grip which is important for low speed riding on the banking. Also, if a quick steering maneuver is needed and grip is reduced, control of the bike is compromised. If a rider goes down in front of you, having full control over the direction of your bike is always preferable. When a tread has micro cracks in the rubber, the puncture resistance is also compromised, and a flat on the track is a flat always best avoided.

Note: if you ride tubular tires, even if the tread is still in good condition, check the glue to ensure it is still solid after living in a cold garage or a velodrome storage area for the winter. The dry, cold Colorado air can make the glue brittle and ineffective over time. Additionally, make sure the base tape is not separating from the tire casing. This can also happen after a season of dry weather riding. To check your glue job and the integrity of the base tape, with your tires moderately inflated (to about 50psi), push on the sidewall of the tire with moderate pressure (two thumbs, with enough force to crush an empty aluminum can). If your tire comes off the rim even a tiny amount, a new glue job is needed. Rotate the wheel and check every 60 degrees, on both sides of both wheels.

Tubular tape: tubular tape is NOT recommended for track tires, and is forbidden for use at Boulder Valley Velodrome. Tubular tape is not an acceptable substitute for tubular glue, it cannot handle the high side loads encountered during track riding.

If you are unsure of how to adjust your equipment, or have a question about the condition of your equipment, consult a qualified professional mechanic.

Having a bike that is in excellent condition is one of the best ways to help lookout for everyone’s safety.
